DZWatch Exclusive: Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach of the German national football team, has addressed the recent decision by Bayer Leverkusen’s promising midfielder, Ibrahim Mazza, to represent Algeria instead of Germany.
Nagelsmann’s comments, initially reported by German media outlets, touch upon the complexities of national team selection for players with dual nationality. “Playing for any national team is an honor that must be earned,” Nagelsmann stated. “I’m not one to chase after players to convince them. It’s regrettable to lose a talented player like Mazza, but ultimately, it’s his choice.”
He emphasized that the decision for players with dual citizenship should stem from a genuine connection. “If you feel an affinity for Algeria, then choose it. If you see yourself as German, then you fight for Germany, regardless of your ranking in the coach’s selections.”
The German coach clarified that Mazza’s decision isn’t solely about competing with established stars like Florian Wirtz or Jamal Musiala. “It goes beyond the sporting aspect. Playing for the national team is linked to feeling and belonging, not just status or the number of appearances,” he explained.
Mazza recently explained his decision following a standout performance for Bayer Leverkusen, where he scored twice in a dominant victory. When questioned by Sky Sports Germany about his choice and whether he regretted not waiting for a chance with the German national team, Mazza responded, “I chose Algeria, and that’s it.”
He cited a purely sporting rationale behind his decision. “In my position, there are great players in the German national team, like Musiala and Wirtz, and the competition is very tough. With Algeria, my chance to develop and participate in the World Cup seems better.”
Mazza previously represented Germany at youth levels before switching his allegiance to Algeria last year, reconnecting with his roots and embarking on a new chapter in his career. His decision highlights the increasing trend of players with dual nationality choosing to represent their heritage.
