Béchar, Algeria – Algeria is actively pursuing the reinforcement of its digital sovereignty, according to Samir Bourahil, President of the National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data. Speaking in Béchar on Tuesday, Bourahil emphasized the nation’s strong understanding of the importance of digital independence and its commitment to bolstering it through various constitutional institutions.
This concerted effort aligns with the national strategy for digital transformation, a key initiative spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The strategy aims to secure Algeria’s digital space and ensure greater control over its data and technological infrastructure.
“Algeria recognizes the critical role digital sovereignty plays in national security and economic development,” Bourahil stated. “We are working diligently to create a robust and secure digital environment that protects our citizens’ data and supports the growth of our digital economy.”
The focus on digital sovereignty includes measures to promote local content creation, develop indigenous technological capabilities, and strengthen cybersecurity defenses. The government is also investing in digital infrastructure and skills development to support the digital transformation process.
Experts believe that Algeria’s commitment to digital sovereignty is a crucial step towards achieving greater economic diversification and reducing its reliance on foreign technology providers. By building a strong and independent digital ecosystem, Algeria aims to position itself as a key player in the regional digital economy.
The national strategy encompasses various sectors, including government services, education, healthcare, and finance. The digitization of these sectors is expected to improve efficiency, transparency, and accessibility for citizens and businesses alike. The Algerian government views this as an essential step to modernizing the country and improving the quality of life for all Algerians.
