Algiers – The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Lounès Magramane, received Ms. Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, the Assistant High Commissioner for Protection at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), today, Tuesday, at the ministry headquarters.
This meeting took place within the framework of Ms. Menikdiwela’s official visit to Algeria, scheduled from November 11th to November 14th, 2025, according to a statement released by the ministry. The visit underscores the ongoing collaboration between Algeria and the UNHCR on matters related to refugee protection and humanitarian assistance.
The discussions likely centered on Algeria’s role in providing assistance and protection to refugees and asylum seekers within its borders, as well as broader regional challenges related to displacement and migration. Algeria has long been recognized for its commitment to humanitarian principles and its efforts to provide a safe haven for those fleeing conflict and persecution.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore avenues for strengthening cooperation between Algeria and the UNHCR in addressing the root causes of displacement and promoting durable solutions for refugees, such as voluntary repatriation, local integration, and resettlement in third countries. The Algerian government and the UNHCR share a common goal of ensuring that refugees are treated with dignity and respect and that their rights are protected in accordance with international law.
Further details regarding the specific topics discussed during the meeting are expected to be released in the coming days. This visit highlights Algeria’s continued engagement with international organizations in addressing critical humanitarian issues.
