Algeria to Enshrine Prevention in All Sector Policies

Algiers, Algeria – The Algerian government is preparing a new legal framework that will mandate the integration of preventative measures into all sectoral policies. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, aims to proactively address health risks and promote well-being across various sectors.

Dr. Djamel Fourar, the Director-General of Prevention and Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health, announced the development of the draft law in Algiers on Tuesday. According to Dr. Fourar, the legislation will obligate all government ministries and agencies to incorporate a prevention component into their respective strategies and programs. This signifies a shift towards a more holistic and proactive approach to public health.

“This law represents a significant step forward in our efforts to safeguard the health and well-being of our citizens,” Dr. Fourar stated. “By embedding prevention into the core of all sectoral policies, we can effectively mitigate health risks and promote healthier lifestyles across the board.”

The proposed law is expected to impact a wide range of sectors, including education, transportation, environment, and agriculture. For example, the Ministry of Education might be required to implement programs promoting healthy eating habits and physical activity in schools. The Ministry of Transportation could be tasked with designing infrastructure that encourages walking and cycling. The Ministry of Environment may need to reinforce air and water quality regulations.

The move reflects a growing global recognition of the importance of preventative healthcare in reducing the burden of disease and improving overall quality of life. The new law is anticipated to be presented to parliament in the coming months.

The Ministry of Health believes this comprehensive approach will lead to a healthier and more resilient population, ultimately contributing to the sustainable development of Algeria.
