UNHCR Praises Algeria’s Support for Sahrawi Refugees

Algiers, November 11, 2025 – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has lauded Algeria’s long-standing commitment to providing assistance and protection to Sahrawi refugees. The commendation came during a meeting held today between the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lounès Magramane, and the UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection, Ruven Menikdiwela.

Ms. Menikdiwela is currently on an official visit to Algeria from November 11th to 14th. The meeting served as an opportunity for both parties to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation and coordination between Algeria and the UNHCR, based on principles of solidarity and shared responsibility. The focus was on addressing the needs and aspirations of refugees, particularly through continued support for humanitarian programs dedicated to Sahrawi refugees.

Both Mr. Magramane and Ms. Menikdiwela emphasized the importance of sustained efforts to mobilize international contributions in support of refugees, particularly in the current complex political and humanitarian landscape. They highlighted the need for continued collaboration to ensure the well-being and protection of vulnerable populations.

During the meeting, Ms. Menikdiwela specifically praised Algeria’s unwavering efforts over the past five decades to create suitable conditions for Sahrawi refugees. She commended the humanitarian and solidarity-based approach that characterizes Algeria’s commitment to this cause. “Algeria’s dedication to providing refuge and support is truly commendable,” she stated, acknowledging the significant resources and dedication the country has consistently demonstrated.

The discussions also touched upon the ongoing challenges faced by refugees and the need for innovative solutions to address their long-term needs, including access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities. The UNHCR reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Algerian government and other partners to ensure the effective implementation of programs aimed at improving the lives of Sahrawi refugees.
