Syrian Gov’t Accuses Outlaw Groups of Truce Violation in Sweida

Damascus has accused armed groups of violating the ceasefire agreement currently in place in the southern province of Sweida. According to a Syrian security source, these groups launched an attack on security outposts in the region on Tuesday evening.

The source, speaking to state media, stated that “outlaw groups targeted Tal Hadid and Tal Aqra in the Sweida countryside with mortar shells and heavy machine guns, in violation of the ceasefire agreement.”

Sweida, a province with a Druze majority, has been subject to a fragile ceasefire since July 19th, following a week of armed clashes between Druze groups and Bedouin tribal factions. These clashes reportedly resulted in hundreds of casualties.

In September, Damascus announced a roadmap, reportedly supported by the United States and Jordan, aimed at establishing reconciliation in Sweida. This roadmap focuses on holding accountable “all those whose hands are stained with attacks on civilians.”

The Syrian government has announced four consecutive ceasefire agreements in Sweida in recent months, three of which have collapsed. The latest accusation raises concerns about the stability of the current truce.

DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation in Sweida and provide updates as they become available.
