Algiers – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has responded positively to a request from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier concerning the situation of Algerian author Boualem Sansal.
On November 10, 2025, President Tebboune received a formal request from President Steinmeier of the Federal Republic of Germany, advocating for clemency for Mr. Sansal. The request, characterized by its humanitarian nature, garnered the President’s immediate attention.
Acting in accordance with Article 91, Paragraph 8 of the Algerian Constitution, and following due legal consultation, President Tebboune has decided to grant the request made by his German counterpart. This decision reflects the strong and friendly relations between Algeria and Germany.
DZWatch understands that the German government will oversee the transfer and medical care of Mr. Sansal. The details of this arrangement are currently being finalized.
