Caracas is bolstering its defenses and preparing its populace for potential conflict, following heightened tensions in the region. President Nicolas Maduro has ordered the formation of national defense commands, signaling a shift towards a more comprehensive national security strategy.
According to reports, these defense commands will operate under the Strategic Operational Command, acting as a crucial component in the country’s defense apparatus. President Maduro emphasized the importance of popular defense, stating that every neighborhood and city must be prepared in the event of armed conflict. This initiative aims to organize popular resistance and local defense should the country face external aggression.
Local media outlets suggest that these defense commands will also provide support to military operations, ensuring the continued operation of essential public services and critical infrastructure following any potential mobilization. This dual approach underscores Venezuela’s focus on both military and civilian preparedness.
The move comes after increased military activity in the region, with Washington announcing the deployment of naval vessels near Venezuelan coasts.
Furthermore, reports indicate that the Venezuelan government is considering multiple strategies in the event of an attack. One strategy involves a protracted resistance campaign, utilizing smaller military units in numerous locations to conduct sabotage and other guerrilla warfare tactics. This approach, dubbed “prolonged resistance,” has been discussed on state television, indicating a clear intention to prepare the population for unconventional warfare.
Another potential strategy involves utilizing intelligence agencies and armed supporters of the ruling party to create civil unrest. This approach highlights the multifaceted nature of Venezuela’s defense planning, encompassing both conventional and unconventional tactics. The formation of national defense commands and the consideration of diverse defense strategies underscores Venezuela’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty in the face of growing regional tensions.
