Cambodia, Thailand Trade Accusations Amid Renewed Border Tensions

Phnom Penh/Bangkok – Cambodia and Thailand have exchanged accusations following renewed tensions along their shared border. The escalation comes after a landmine explosion injured Thai soldiers, prompting Bangkok to suspend a recently brokered peace agreement.

The two nations endured a series of deadly clashes this past summer, resulting in numerous fatalities and the displacement of hundreds of thousands. A peace accord, facilitated by international mediation, had quelled the conflict. However, the recent landmine incident near the Preah Vihear temple has reignited tensions.

Thailand announced the suspension of the peace agreement after the explosion injured four of its soldiers. The Thai Prime Minister has also reportedly halted the planned release of Cambodian soldiers.

The incident has led to heightened security measures along the Cambodian-Thai border. The Thai National Security Council convened, authorizing military operations and urging Cambodia to take responsibility for the recent landmine incidents.

Cambodia denies planting new landmines and reaffirms its commitment to peace. A Cambodian government spokesperson accused Thai forces of firing upon civilians in a village in Banteay Meanchey province, resulting in injuries.

A Thai military spokesperson stated that soldiers heard gunfire from the Cambodian side. While asserting that Thai troops did not return fire, the spokesperson characterized the incident as a provocation.
