Primary School Assessment Changes Announced for 2025-2026

Algiers – The Ministry of National Education has outlined changes to the pedagogical assessment methods for primary school students, effective for the 2025-2026 academic year. According to a ministerial directive, primary school students will now undertake a single end-of-term examination for each subject, with the exception of music, art, and physical education.

The directive specifies that the assessment of third-year students’ proficiency in French and English during the first term will be conducted through descriptive and qualitative feedback. This approach aims to accurately reflect the level of mastery of fundamental skills associated with these two languages. Instead of numerical grades, teachers will provide detailed observations on student progress.

Similarly, the evaluation of fourth-year students’ Tamazight language skills during the first term will also utilize a descriptive and qualitative methodology. The goal is to gauge the extent to which students have acquired the core competencies specific to the Tamazight language.

Regarding the calculation of overall averages, the Ministry has confirmed that the established methodology currently in place for primary education will remain unchanged. The system employed during the 2024/2025 academic year will continue to be used.
