Algiers, DZWatch – Algeria will host the 42nd session of the Council of Arab Justice Ministers in November 2026, the Ministry of Justice has announced. The event will also include a meeting of the Council’s Executive Bureau.
The announcement was made at the conclusion of the 41st session held in Cairo, which was attended by Algerian Minister of Justice, Abderrachid Tabi, along with other Arab Justice Ministers and official delegations. The Council expressed its gratitude to Algeria for its willingness to host the upcoming session, conveying confidence in Algeria’s ability to successfully organize this important Arab gathering.
During his address to his Arab counterparts, Minister Tabi presented an overview of the significant reforms undertaken by Algeria in the justice sector. He highlighted the efforts made to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and enhance rights and freedoms. He explained that the reforms encompass areas of human resource training, legislative development, and the modernization of the judicial system through the introduction of information and communication technologies and the adoption of e-litigation.
Throughout the sessions, the Council of Arab Justice Ministers called for increased coordination in addressing current legal and security challenges, and for the activation of joint agreements to strengthen Arab judicial integration. The Council also approved several resolutions, including:
- Forming joint committees between the Councils of Arab Justice and Interior Ministers to update the draft Arab model law on lists of terrorist entities.
- Revising the Riyadh Agreement for Judicial Cooperation, signed in 1983, to align with modern legislative developments.
- Developing an Arab strategy to combat transnational organized crime in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
- Supporting the efforts of the Sudanese Ministry of Justice in developing its judicial institutions and combating money laundering and terrorist financing.
On the sidelines of the meetings, Minister Tabi held talks with his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Sweidat, to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
