Algeria’s Attaf Meets UN Libya Envoy, Discusses Peace Efforts

Algerian Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Attaf received Hanna Tetteh, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), at the Ministry headquarters today.

According to a statement released by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting focused on the latest developments in Libya, with particular emphasis on UN efforts to guide the country towards stability, security, and the preservation of its sovereignty, unity, and independence.

The UN Envoy briefed Minister Attaf on the steps outlined in the UN roadmap presented to the Security Council on August 21, 2025. These steps include preparing the legal framework for elections, unifying executive institutions, and her vision for organizing structured dialogue. Tetteh also emphasized the importance of mobilizing further international and regional support for UN endeavors.

Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s support for the UN’s efforts to ensure the success of the political process. He stressed the imperative of holding elections as the only way to overcome the current phase and rejected all forms of foreign interference in Libyan internal affairs. He also emphasized the importance of a Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to inform the UN Envoy about the outcomes of the consultative ministerial meeting of the Tripartite Mechanism of Libya’s neighboring countries, held in Algiers on November 6, 2025. This mechanism aims to coordinate regional efforts to support stability in Libya.
