Poll: Significant Opposition to Netanyahu Pardon in Israel

Jerusalem – A recent poll indicates substantial public opposition within Israel to the prospect of granting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a pardon regarding the corruption charges he currently faces. The survey, conducted by the Lazar Institute, reveals that 44% of Israelis are against such a pardon.

The poll, which surveyed a random sample of 500 Israeli adults, comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings against Netanyahu, who is facing accusations related to corruption, bribery, and breach of trust. The survey’s margin of error is reported to be 4.4%.

According to the poll, 39% of respondents expressed support for a potential pardon, while 17% indicated they were undecided. The issue of a potential pardon has become a topic of public debate, particularly in light of the ongoing legal challenges faced by the Prime Minister.

The survey also delved into public sentiment regarding the events of October 7th, 2023. A majority, 67%, favored the establishment of a governmental commission, appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attacks. Conversely, 23% opposed the formation of such a commission, and 10% expressed uncertainty.

Furthermore, the poll addressed the potential impact of a foreign military presence in the Gaza Strip. A slight majority, 51%, believe that such a presence would negatively affect the Israeli military’s ability to address future security threats emanating from the region. In contrast, 24% believe it would not be detrimental, and 25% remain unsure.

Finally, the survey explored the potential outcome of parliamentary elections if held today. The results suggest that opposition parties would secure 62 seats in the Knesset, while parties supporting Netanyahu would garner 48 seats. Arab parties are projected to win 10 seats. Under Israeli law, a minimum of 61 seats is required to form a government.

It is important to note that no immediate elections are anticipated, as Prime Minister Netanyahu has indicated his intention to serve out his current term.
