Algiers International Half Marathon a Resounding Success

Algiers, Algeria – The inaugural Algiers International Half Marathon concluded successfully today, drawing approximately 6,500 athletes to the capital city. The event, held on Friday, was hailed as a significant achievement, showcasing Algeria’s readiness to host major international sporting competitions.

The race featured both local and international runners, with 13 elite athletes representing various countries. Participants praised the organization and atmosphere of the half marathon, which covered a 21.097-kilometer course through the heart of Algiers.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including the Governor of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabhi, representatives from the Ministry of Sports, and members of the National and Provincial People’s Assembly. Olympic champion Noureddine Morceli also graced the occasion, adding to the event’s prestige.

Aziz Bouras, President of the Algiers Athletics League, emphasized the meticulous planning and execution of the race, which was held under the patronage of the Governor of Algiers and the Directorate of Youth and Sports. He noted the positive feedback from participants, who appreciated the festive atmosphere along the race route. Approximately 800 individuals contributed to the technical and organizational aspects of the event.

Kenyan athlete Maiwa Simon secured first place in the men’s division, expressing admiration for the scenic course and the enthusiastic support from the crowds. Mohamed Saif Eddine Boukrataba was the highest-placing Algerian runner, finishing sixth. In the women’s division, Kenyan athletes claimed the top two spots, followed by an Ethiopian runner in third place. Souad Ait Salem was the top Algerian female finisher, securing fourth place.

Algerian runners dominated the veteran’s category. In the 10km race, Algerian representatives achieved a clean sweep, securing the top ten positions in the men’s race and the top five in the women’s race.

The half marathon and 10km race commenced near Ferhani Stadium in Bab El Oued, passing through key landmarks in Algiers, including Omar Hamadi Stadium in Bologhine, Place de la Bourse, Colonel Amirouche Street, Mohamed Belouizdad Street, and the Khelifa Boukhalfa metro station, before concluding at the Algiers Province headquarters. The event is hoped to boost sport and tourism within the region.
