Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra has confirmed that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has proposed a partnership between the two countries in shipbuilding.
The proposal came during a meeting between Lamamra and Erdogan in Ankara last week.
Lamamra said that the partnership would be a natural extension of the “historical” cooperation between Algeria and Turkey in the shipbuilding industry.
He noted that Algeria is one of Turkey’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade exceeding $5 billion.
Lamamra also said that 1,500 Turkish companies are operating in Algeria, providing 30,000 jobs.
In a separate development, Lamamra said that Algeria and Turkey are in advanced negotiations to renew a gas supply contract.
The proposed shipbuilding partnership is a sign of the growing economic and political ties between Algeria and Turkey.
The two countries have a shared interest in developing their maritime industries, and the partnership could help to create jobs and boost economic growth in both countries.
