Zeroual: Oct. 17 Protests Showcase Diaspora’s Patriotism

Former President Liamine Zeroual has stated that the 64th anniversary of the October 17, 1961, demonstrations serves as a stark reminder of the brutal colonial practices inflicted upon the Algerian people.

In a post on his Facebook page, Zeroual wrote, “The anniversary of the October 17, 1961, demonstrations returns us to the criminal colonial practices committed against the Algerian people on that ominous day. It reflects one of the most horrific aspects of a series of heinous massacres and crimes against humanity, the tragedies of which are etched in the nation’s memory.”

He further added, “While the martyrs of that terrible massacre joined their brethren, who had sacrificed their lives through successive popular resistance movements and during the glorious liberation revolution, with pride, honor, and dignity, their sacrifices will remain a powerful and shining reference. It stands as a testament to the diaspora’s connection to their homeland and a saga from the epics of the Algerian people’s bitter struggle throughout the ages, a zeal for the nation’s identity, and a consolidation of its unity.”

Zeroual concluded his statement by saying, “As we commemorate this immortal milestone in the history of our glorious revolution and pay homage to the souls of our righteous martyrs, those who, with the courage of heroes and the stance of honorable people, created an eternal scene of defending the nation’s honor sixty-four years ago, we remember them with reverence. On this anniversary, we remember with reverence and respect the processions of the nation’s martyrs in all stages of resistance and struggle.”

“Long live Algeria, free and dignified. Glory and eternity to our righteous martyrs.”

The former president’s words highlight the enduring significance of the October 17 demonstrations in Algerian history and the sacrifices made by Algerians both at home and abroad in the fight for independence. This event serves as a poignant reminder of the colonial past and the importance of preserving national identity and unity.
