Building Collapse in Hussein Dey, Algiers: Investigation Underway

A residential building in the Hussein Dey district of Algiers partially collapsed early Saturday morning, prompting an immediate response from local authorities. According to a statement released by the Wilaya of Algiers, the right side of the four-story building, including the ground floor, suffered a complete collapse, while the remainder of the structure remained standing.

Security services quickly secured the site, establishing a perimeter to ensure public safety. Civil Protection units were also deployed, and one person was transported to Mustafa Pacha University Hospital for treatment of injuries. No fatalities have been reported.

The Wali of Algiers, Mohamed Abdennour Rabah, along with the Chief of Wilaya Security, the Delegate Wali of the Hussein Dey administrative district, and the Mayor, visited the scene to oversee rescue operations and assess the situation. Residents of the collapsed building, as well as 27 families from two adjacent buildings, were temporarily relocated to a hotel in Hussein Dey as a precautionary measure.

Preliminary investigations suggest that excavation work carried out by a contractor to a depth of approximately four meters adjacent to the building’s foundation may have been a contributing factor in the collapse. Despite renovations carried out by the Wilaya services last year, which deemed the three buildings to be in good condition, the proximity of the excavation work raises serious concerns.

A thorough security investigation is now underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Appropriate legal action will be taken pending the completion of a technical expertise report from the Building Technical Control Center (CTC). The investigation aims to uncover any negligence or violations of building codes that may have contributed to the collapse.
