Lebanon Files UN Complaint Over Israeli Border Wall

Beirut – Lebanon has formally lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council against Israel, alleging the construction of a concrete wall that violates the internationally recognized Blue Line. President Michel Aoun instructed Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib to task Lebanon’s permanent mission to the UN with filing the urgent complaint.

The complaint details concerns regarding the construction of a concrete wall along the southern Lebanese border, which Beirut asserts extends beyond the Blue Line demarcated following Israel’s withdrawal in 2000. Reports accompanying the complaint, referencing UN findings, refute Israeli denials of the wall’s transgression.

The Lebanese Presidency stated that the reports confirm the concrete wall has effectively denied southern Lebanese residents access to over 4,000 square meters of Lebanese territory. These reports also indicate that the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has informed Israel of the necessity to remove the wall.

Lebanon argues that Israel’s continued presence and construction activities within Lebanese territory constitute a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, as well as a breach of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
