Iran Reaffirms Right to Uranium Enrichment Amid Sanctions

Tehran has reiterated its unwavering right to uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes, asserting that this right is non-negotiable. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized this stance during a forum held on Sunday, underscoring Iran’s commitment to its nuclear program.

Araqchi stated that Iran has never abandoned the option of negotiations and diplomacy. However, he accused other parties, implicitly referring to the United States, of repeatedly “betraying diplomacy,” stressing the importance of adhering to the principles and standards of diplomatic processes.

The Foreign Minister suggested that recent events have demonstrated that diplomacy remains the only viable option. He noted a renewed interest in resuming negotiations regarding the nuclear program. In a similar vein, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ismail Baghaei emphasized last week the country’s dedication to diplomacy and negotiations, asserting that Iran’s interests lie in achieving positive outcomes through dialogue with the West, given the impact of sanctions on the population and the national economy.

Past events highlight that Iran and the US administration held five rounds of indirect negotiations on the nuclear issue some months ago. However, preparations for a sixth round were disrupted following an aerial attack in June 2025 and subsequent US intervention. The conflict lasted for 12 days before a ceasefire was announced.

Last September, Iran also held talks with the European troika (France, Germany, and Britain) on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. These discussions failed to yield concrete results, leading to the re-activation of the snapback mechanism and the reimposition of UN sanctions on Tehran. Iran attributed the failure of the talks to what it described as “unreasonable and illogical demands” presented by the United States through European intermediaries. Iran maintains that constructive dialogue is the only path forward. The nation remains committed to protecting its national interests.
