Algeria Secures International Recognition for its Dates

Rome, Italy – Algeria has successfully advocated for the inclusion of specific characteristics of Algerian dates, particularly the renowned ‘Deglet Nour’ variety, within internationally recognized standards. This achievement was realized during the 48th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, held at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) headquarters in Rome from November 10th to 14th.

The Ministry of Internal Trade and National Market Regulation announced the breakthrough, emphasizing the importance of this recognition for Algerian date producers and exporters. The inclusion of Algerian date specifications in the Codex Alimentarius standards will facilitate international trade and ensure that the unique qualities of Algerian dates are acknowledged and valued globally.

“This is a significant victory for Algeria’s agricultural sector,” stated a representative from the Ministry. “It underscores the quality and distinctiveness of our dates, especially the ‘Deglet Nour,’ and will undoubtedly boost our exports and strengthen our position in the international market.”

The Codex Alimentarius Commission is an international food standards body established jointly by the FAO and the World Health Organization (WHO). Its standards, guidelines, and codes of practice contribute to the safety, quality, and fairness of international food trade. Algeria’s success in having its date specifications incorporated into these standards is a testament to the country’s commitment to quality and its active participation in global agricultural governance.

This achievement is expected to have a positive impact on the Algerian economy, providing increased opportunities for date farmers and exporters. It also serves as an example of Algeria’s commitment to promoting its unique agricultural products on the international stage.
