Mexico: Viral Images of ‘Gen Z’ Protests – Fact-Checked

Mexico City – As youth-led protests gain momentum in Mexico, online platforms have been flooded with images and videos purportedly depicting massive crowds of young demonstrators taking to the streets. Claims of foreign involvement in supporting these protests have also surfaced, prompting questions about the authenticity of the visuals circulating online.

Several social media accounts have shared videos claiming to show hundreds of thousands of people participating in the demonstrations, fueling speculation about the scale of the protests. DZWatch has investigated several claims linked to these demonstrations to verify their origin and accuracy in relation to events unfolding in Mexico.

One widely shared video on X, formerly Twitter, claimed to show aerial footage of massive crowds filling streets, supposedly depicting the current protests. The video garnered hundreds of thousands of views, reinforcing the impression of widespread public participation. However, a reverse image search revealed that the video is not related to the current protests. The footage was originally posted weeks prior on TikTok and depicts the annual ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrations in Mexico City. This confirms that the video is unrelated to the recent Gen Z protests.
