Algeria’s Initiative for Niger Crisis Resolution | Diplomatic Solution

Algeria, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has introduced a comprehensive initiative to address the ongoing crisis in Niger. The plan, which spans six months, prioritizes transparency and inclusivity with the objective of not only shaping Niger’s future but also addressing broader regional concerns in the Sahel.

President Tebboune’s proposal outlines five fundamental prerequisites, five objectives, and three directional approaches for this initiative. It aims to establish a political solution guided by a mutually accepted civilian leader, striving to restore constitutional order within a maximum period of six months and a transitional phase lasting no more than three years.

This initiative welcomes contributions and is open to an inclusive national dialogue within one month to resolve the Niger crisis. It places significant emphasis on rejecting unconstitutional changes, and Algeria intends to reinforce this principle during the upcoming African Union Summit to put an end to the era of coups that have destabilized many African countries.

Furthermore, Algeria plans to engage in intensive consultations with relevant parties involved in resolving the Niger crisis, including Niger itself, neighboring nations, particularly Nigeria, and partners willing to support the diplomatic process.

This initiative comes in response to the coup d’état that occurred on 26 July 2023 when President Mohamed Bazoum was removed from power by the country’s presidential guard. Algeria and other international bodies are working towards a diplomatic solution, given ECOWAS’s threat of military intervention to restore democratic rule in Niger.
