Algeria and Vietnam are set to enhance their collaboration in the crucial area of building restoration and rehabilitation. This initiative signals a deepening of ties between the two nations in the construction and urban development sectors.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry, Said Attia, representing the Minister of Housing, Urban Planning, and the City, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi, received the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Construction, Nguyen Tong Van, and his accompanying delegation, which included ministry officials and representatives from specialized construction companies. The meeting highlighted the importance of a forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding between Algeria and Vietnam. This agreement is envisioned as a strong foundation for future cooperation.
During the discussions, both parties exchanged views on the prospects for bilateral cooperation between their respective ministries in the fields of housing and urban development. Attia emphasized Algeria’s significant achievements in the housing sector, noting the completion of 1.7 million housing units between 2020 and 2024. He highlighted Algeria’s developed technical and organizational capabilities in studies and project execution to meet housing demand. He also referenced President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s program to build two million housing units between 2024 and 2029.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Tong Van outlined Vietnam’s ambition to construct one million social housing units by 2030. He also addressed the challenges Vietnam faces, particularly in housing classification, where a surplus of luxury housing contrasts with a shortage of social housing. He noted that social housing financing in Vietnam is not state-funded, despite available facilitations.
Ultimately, both sides agreed to exchange expertise, especially in building restoration and rehabilitation. They also agreed to strengthen technical and institutional cooperation between the two ministries. This collaboration marks a significant step towards improving housing infrastructure and urban development in both Algeria and Vietnam.
