Algeria Ranks Second in Barley Production Across Arab, African Nations

Algeria has secured the position of second-largest barley producer in both the Arab world and Africa. The nation’s barley output reached approximately 1.2 million tons during the 2024/2025 season. This achievement underscores Algeria’s growing significance in regional agricultural production.

The latest figures place Algeria just behind Iraq in the Arab world, where production hit 1.4 million tons for the same period. Across the African continent, Ethiopia leads with a substantial 2.48 million tons of barley produced during the season.

Notably, Algeria experienced a significant increase in barley production, marking a 17% rise compared to the 2023/2024 season. Production climbed from 1.03 million tons to 1.23 million tons, demonstrating a considerable year-on-year improvement.

Globally, barley production reached around 143.33 million tons. This reflects a slight decrease of 0.13% compared to the 2023/2024 season, which saw a total output of 143.51 million tons. Despite this minor global dip, Algeria’s performance remains a bright spot, highlighting the country’s commitment to agricultural development and food security.

Algeria’s strong showing in barley production reinforces its role as a key player in the agricultural landscape of both the Arab world and Africa. This achievement is expected to contribute positively to the nation’s economy and its ability to meet domestic demand.
