Algiers – Algeria has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and continues to play an active diplomatic role on the international stage. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently hosted a media briefing to address key regional and international developments, particularly those prioritized by Algerian diplomacy.
This briefing comes as Algeria’s term on the UN Security Council nears its end. Throughout its tenure, Algeria has remained committed to its national identity, its history of struggle, its Arab, Islamic, and African affiliations, and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
According to a statement, Algeria has consistently adhered to this approach during its membership and is preparing to hand over its seat to its Arab and African brothers at the beginning of next year. The recent period has witnessed significant developments in matters of importance to Algeria on the international scene, primarily the Palestinian issue, the Western Sahara issue, and the situation in the Sahel and Sahara region.
Algeria is closely monitoring these issues, drawing on its responsibility as a representative of the Arab and African communities in the Security Council, while ensuring that national and international positions are expressed simultaneously. A recent development includes the Security Council’s adoption of a new resolution on the situation in Gaza, drafted by the United States as part of a so-called “Gaza Peace Plan.” Algeria voted in favor of this resolution, taking into account its core objectives, underlying factors, and the positions of key regional actors.
The resolution identifies the urgent priorities for the current phase following the Israeli aggression on Gaza, which include four main dimensions: establishing a ceasefire agreement, providing international protection for the Palestinian people, enabling humanitarian relief efforts without restrictions, and paving the way for the launch of reconstruction in Gaza.
The statement emphasized that Algeria has consistently advocated for these priorities since the beginning of its term on the Security Council, noting that the resolution provides a binding basis for addressing these issues without compromising the fundamentals of resolving the Palestinian issue. The resolution stresses the need to respect the ceasefire, rejects any justification for resuming aggression, establishes the deployment of an international force to maintain security and stability in Gaza, rejects forced displacement and any attempts at occupation by force, and calls for lifting restrictions on relief efforts.
