Algiers, Algeria – Algeria has reaffirmed its readiness to mediate between Morocco and the Polisario Front concerning the Western Sahara dispute, according to Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. The announcement underscores Algeria’s commitment to facilitating a resolution to the long-standing conflict.
Minister Attaf emphasized that Algeria is prepared to contribute to the launch of a political mediation initiative aimed at revitalizing the UN-led settlement process for the Western Sahara issue. This offer comes amidst evolving regional and international dynamics that have brought the issue back to the forefront of discussions within the United Nations.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that any mediation effort led or participated in by Algeria must strictly adhere to the framework established by the United Nations. Furthermore, such efforts must be grounded in the principles of international law and the resolutions of the Security Council, which affirm the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
Algeria maintains that its position stems from its status as a neighboring country to the conflict and its firm belief that the continued political stalemate poses a significant threat to regional stability. This concern is particularly acute in light of the volatile situation prevailing in the Sahel and Sahara regions.
DZWatch understands that this renewed offer of mediation reflects Algeria’s deep concern for regional peace and security, and its determination to play a constructive role in resolving the Western Sahara dispute through peaceful and internationally recognized means. The focus remains on supporting a UN-backed process that respects the rights of all parties involved.
