Algeria Joins G77+China Summit in Call for Global Economic Reform

Havana, Cuba, September 16, 2023 – Algeria joined a hundred countries from Asia, Africa, and Latin America at the G77+China summit in Havana, Cuba, on Thursday. The summit, which is themed “The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation in Development,” called for global economic reform to address the challenges facing developing countries.

Algeria was represented at the summit by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari and Minister of Economy of Knowledge, Startups, and Micro-Enterprises Yacine El Mahdi Oualid.

In his opening remarks, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said that developing countries are the main victims of the current global crisis, which is characterized by cyclical disruptions in trade, international finance, and unequal exchanges. He called for a new international order that is more representative and responsive to the needs of developing countries.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also spoke at the summit, calling for a more just and equitable world. He said that developing countries are “trapped in a web of global crises” and need more support to address them.

Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the importance of South-South cooperation in his speech. He said that developing countries need to work together to build a more prosperous and sustainable future.

The summit ended with a declaration calling for global economic reform to address the challenges facing developing countries. The declaration called for increased investment in science, technology, and innovation; improved access to trade and finance; and debt relief for developing countries.

The Algerian delegation’s participation in the summit is a sign of the country’s commitment to working with other developing countries to address the challenges facing the global economy. Algeria is a major player in the global economy, and its participation in the summit is an important step in promoting South-South cooperation.
