A 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck Algeria on September 17, 2023, at 2:41 AM local time. The epicenter of the quake was located 3 kilometers northeast of Ben Djarah, in the province of Guelma.
The earthquake was felt in several provinces across Algeria, including Guelma, Skikda, and Annaba. There were no reports of injuries or damage, but the quake left residents shaken.
“It was a very strong quake,” said one resident of Guelma. “I was woken up by the shaking and thought my house was going to collapse.”
Another resident said that the quake was a reminder of the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
“This is a reminder that we need to be prepared for anything,” she said. “We need to have a plan in place in case of a disaster.”
The earthquake is the latest in a series of natural disasters to hit Algeria in recent years. In 2022, a series of floods killed dozens of people and caused widespread damage.
The government has pledged to improve disaster preparedness in Algeria. However, many residents say that more needs to be done to protect them from natural disasters.
