Algiers – The issue of Western Sahara remains firmly on the United Nations agenda, according to Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. In a recent statement, the Minister emphasized that claims suggesting a ‘final closure’ of the dossier are inaccurate.
Minister Attaf highlighted the recent adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797, which renewed the mandate of MINURSO (the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara), as confirmation that the matter continues to be actively addressed within the UN framework. This resolution, he asserted, underscores the ongoing international engagement with the Western Sahara question.
Algeria maintains that the resolution upholds fundamental principles for a political solution, including:
- The United Nations’ sponsorship of the negotiation process.
- Direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front.
- Agreement between the parties on a final resolution.
- Guaranteeing the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
The Algerian government has reiterated its readiness to support any UN-led mediation efforts, provided they adhere to the framework of international law. DZWatch will continue to monitor developments on this ongoing issue.
