Algiers – Gyor striker Nazir Benbouali has revealed his unavailability for the upcoming Arab Cup, while simultaneously expressing his determination to earn a call-up to the Algerian national team.
The 25-year-old forward stated that his primary focus this season is to catch the eye of national team coach Vladimir Petkovic and translate his impressive form in the Hungarian league into an opportunity to represent Les Fennecs.
Benbouali emphasized his relentless efforts to regain peak fitness following previous stints with Paradou AC and Charleroi, sending a direct message to the coaching staff.
Speaking to DZWatch, Benbouali said he has harbored a dream of playing for Algeria for years. He added that while he respects Petkovic’s choices, it won’t deter him from working tirelessly to prove his worth in upcoming matches.
Regarding his forced absence from the Arab Cup 2025, Benbouali explained that he was prepared to represent the Algerian B team, but his Hungarian club refused to release him. “I was hoping to participate, but my team did not grant me permission,” he stated. “They believe that my absence for three games in December would affect the starting lineup, and there is no replacement to compensate for me.”
Former Algerian B team coach Madjid Bougherra confirmed that he had contacted Benbouali and intended to include him in the squad. However, Gyor’s refusal thwarted the plan, especially since the Arab Cup is not on the FIFA calendar, preventing national teams from compelling European clubs to release their players.
Despite missing the Arab Cup, Benbouali continues to impress in Europe. He is currently the top Algerian goalscorer in European leagues this season, having scored 11 goals and provided one assist in 19 appearances for Gyor, solidifying his position as a promising player whose potential debut with the national team is eagerly anticipated.
