Berlin is hosting a major summit today focused on bolstering Europe’s digital security and reducing its reliance on non-European technology companies. The European Digital Sovereignty Summit brings together delegations from 23 countries, including ministers, military officials, and defense experts.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are scheduled to meet to discuss strategies for fostering greater technological independence within the continent. Merz and Macron are expected to deliver keynote addresses at the summit.
Key discussions will center on cloud computing and the development of a secure European infrastructure for storing governmental and corporate data. The summit will also address the use of software within government agencies and public administration.
With the increasing importance of artificial intelligence across numerous sectors, the summit aims to respond to growing calls for Europe to exert greater control over its digital destiny. Currently, major American companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google dominate the cloud computing market.
Announcements regarding collaborations and investments from German and French companies are anticipated in areas including computing infrastructure, technology, healthcare, defense, and drone technology. Government sources in Berlin indicate that over 140 speakers are expected to participate, including German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his Swedish counterpart, Pål Jonson.
The summit underscores Europe’s ambition to strengthen its digital autonomy and ensure its technological future is firmly within its own control.
