Petkovic Clarifies Mahrez’s Potential Arab Cup Absence

Algiers – National team coach Vladimir Petkovic has addressed speculation surrounding Riyad Mahrez’s participation in the upcoming Arab Cup. During a press conference held today, Petkovic indicated that the team captain is unlikely to feature in the tournament, with the primary focus being preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

While Petkovic acknowledged that the possibility of Mahrez and Houssem Aouar participating in the Arab Cup is not entirely “impossible,” he emphasized that their complete readiness for AFCON remains the priority. The coach stressed the challenges of competing in two major tournaments within a short timeframe, prompting the technical staff to carefully assess all options to ensure optimal preparation for the national team.

“Competing in two tournaments in quick succession presents a significant physical challenge,” Petkovic stated, highlighting the need for a realistic approach to squad management.

Regarding his selection process for AFCON, the Swiss coach expressed confidence in identifying the right players. “The next two matches will clarify the picture further,” he said. “I know my players well, and I will choose the best. Having five substitutions gives me great flexibility in managing matches.”

Petkovic also revealed that the team will play a final friendly match at the Sidi Moussa training center five days before the start of AFCON, allowing for final tactical adjustments.

The coach emphasized that no player is guaranteed a spot in the squad, whether it’s Riyad Mahrez or Hadj Moussa. He reiterated that team spirit is fundamental to his project. “In AFCON, we will have to make difficult decisions,” he admitted. “Playing at this level makes the process of excluding some players complicated.”

Petkovic concluded by asserting that the strength of the team will be evident in its substitutes, which he sees as a key factor for success in the upcoming continental tournament. “The depth of our squad will be vital.”
