Algeria Explains Vote on Gaza Peace Plan at UN Security Council

Algeria has clarified the reasons behind its vote on the recent resolution concerning a peace plan for Gaza at the United Nations Security Council. The vote, cast during Monday’s session, reflects a responsible engagement with Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic perspectives, while remaining firmly rooted in Algeria’s historical support for the Palestinian cause.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf emphasized that Algeria’s decision aligns with the broader Arab consensus on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and adheres to internationally agreed-upon principles for a just, lasting, and comprehensive solution. Speaking at a press conference, Minister Attaf reiterated Algeria’s commitment to upholding its values and principles, as enshrined in the UN Charter, during its final term on the Security Council.

He highlighted President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directive to remain steadfast in Algeria’s identity, its Arab, Islamic, and African affiliations, and its dedication to the principles of the United Nations. Algeria aims to ensure a smooth transition as it prepares to hand over its responsibilities to other Arab and African nations joining the Security Council next year.

The Foreign Minister detailed Algeria’s perspective, analysis, and engagement with developments, emphasizing its role as a representative of both the Arab world and the African continent within the UN Security Council. Minister Attaf explained that Algeria’s affirmative vote on the US-proposed peace plan for Gaza was based on several objective considerations, including the core objectives of the resolution, the underlying context, and the positions of key regional actors.

Priorities for Gaza

Attaf stated that the core objectives of the resolution address the urgent priorities of the current phase, particularly in the aftermath of the recent conflict in Gaza. These priorities are fourfold: first, to solidify the ceasefire agreement; second, to provide international protection for the Palestinian people; third, to enable humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza; and finally, to resume the peace process.
