Algeria Warns of Escalating Terrorism in Mali, Offers Support

Algeria has reiterated its deep concern regarding the escalating terrorist threats in Mali, emphasizing the potential for destabilizing the entire region. Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated that Algeria had foreseen and warned against the current situation nearly two years ago, following Mali’s unilateral withdrawal from the peace and reconciliation agreement facilitated by Algeria.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Attaf affirmed that Algeria’s approach to security and stability is not self-centered but encompasses the well-being of its neighbors, particularly in the Sahel region. He stressed that the unprecedented rise in terrorist activity in Mali is a matter of grave concern for Algeria.

“What is happening in Mali today, with the growing terrorist dangers that have reached unprecedented levels and boundaries, concerns and worries us more than it concerns or worries others,” Attaf declared. “It pains us more than it pains others.”

This concern stems not only from Mali’s geographical proximity to Algeria but also from Algeria’s historical commitment to supporting Mali through various crises since its independence. Algeria has consistently championed the unity of Mali, its people, and its institutions, as well as its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Minister Attaf referenced a statement issued by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 26, 2024, which cautioned that a military solution poses a significant threat to Mali’s unity and territorial integrity, potentially igniting civil war, undermining national reconciliation efforts, and jeopardizing regional security and stability.

“Today, as we witness the realization of what Algeria warned against two years ago, we can only hope that those in charge of Mali will awaken and realize the imperative of returning to the political path,” Attaf stated. He urged a renewed focus on political solutions to avert further catastrophes not only for Mali but for the entire region. Algeria remains committed to supporting its Malian brothers and stands ready to assist in finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis.
