In his speech to the 78th United Nations General Assembly, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s aspiration to reach a final liquidation of the phenomenon of colonialism from the last African colony, Western Sahara. He called on the United Nations to do its duty in the face of “attempts to create legitimacy out of illegality” by preserving the credibility of its decisions, and reiterated Algeria’s support for international efforts to initiate direct negotiations between the two parties to the conflict in order to organize a referendum that would allow for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.

President Tebboune also renewed Algeria’s firm position in supporting just causes and oppressed peoples struggling for liberation, especially the Palestinian and Sahrawi issues.
