National Statistics Office Now Under Prime Minister’s Authority

Algiers – A new presidential decree has placed the National Statistics Office (ONS) under the direct authority of the Prime Minister, according to the latest issue (No. 75) of the Official Gazette. The move signifies a shift in the organizational structure governing national data and statistics.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune signed Decree No. 25-293 on November 10, 2025, effectively transferring oversight of the ONS to the Prime Minister’s office. This decision aims to enhance governmental coordination in the crucial area of national statistics and data management.

The new decree supersedes Presidential Decree No. 25-129, issued on April 22, 2025, which previously granted the High Commissioner for Digitalization supervisory power over the ONS. The revocation of the previous decree underscores the government’s commitment to streamlining the statistical system.

This structural change suggests an intent to bolster the effectiveness of the national statistical framework by consolidating supervision within the executive branch. The realignment is expected to contribute to the development of data-driven public policies. By placing the ONS under the direct purview of the Prime Minister, the government seeks to ensure efficient data collection, analysis, and dissemination, ultimately leading to more informed decision-making processes across various sectors.

The move reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize and optimize its administrative structures, particularly in areas critical to economic planning and social development. Further details regarding the implementation of this decree are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
