The White House has refuted claims that President Donald Trump desires the execution of six Democratic lawmakers. These lawmakers were accused by Trump of inciting insubordination within the U.S. military. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt addressed the issue, denying any intention of seeking such extreme punishment.
However, Leavitt also criticized the Democratic representatives, alleging that they are encouraging members of the armed forces to defy the chain of command. Her remarks followed Trump’s earlier attacks on the lawmakers, who had reportedly advised soldiers to refuse unlawful orders.
Trump, via his Truth Social platform, reposted an article referencing a video featuring the six Democratic legislators, all of whom have served in the military or intelligence agencies. He labeled their actions as ‘treasonous’ and suggested they could face execution. In a previous post, Trump questioned whether they should be imprisoned for their ‘seditious behavior’.
These recent posts are the latest in a series of instances where Trump has advocated for the punishment of his perceived political enemies. Since returning to office, he has repeatedly called for the imprisonment of his opponents, and his Justice Department has targeted critics such as former federal officials John Bolton and James Comey.
This is not the first time Trump’s rhetoric has sparked controversy. In November 2021, he defended supporters who chanted for the hanging of Vice President Mike Pence during the January 6th Capitol riot.
Democratic leaders have strongly condemned Trump’s remarks, asserting that his words could incite violence. Congressional leaders have stated they have contacted Capitol Police to ensure the safety of the Democratic representatives. The Democratic lawmakers in question, with backgrounds in the military and intelligence, released a video cautioning service members regarding potentially unlawful orders.
