French Sailor Medically Evacuated Off Algerian Coast

A French sailor was medically evacuated off the coast of Ain Benian, north of Algiers, following a distress call, the Ministry of National Defence announced today. The operation was initiated after the National Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) received a distress signal early Friday morning from a sailor aboard the French-flagged sailing vessel “SY-FRILEUSE.” The vessel was located approximately 57 nautical miles north of Ain Benian.

Reports indicate the vessel was en route from Sardinia to the Strait of Gibraltar when the sailor, identified as Nicolas Charpy, 60, experienced a medical emergency. Upon receiving the distress call, the National MRCC, in coordination with the Regional MRCC in Algiers, activated its intervention plan. This involved deploying the AS-12 search and rescue helicopter from the 560th Squadron.

The swift operation resulted in the sailor’s prompt evacuation to the Zeralda hospital, where he is currently receiving the necessary medical care. His condition is reported to be stable.

The Ministry of National Defence emphasizes that this operation is part of the humanitarian missions undertaken by the Coast Guard units. It demonstrates their readiness and constant preparedness to intervene and save human lives at sea, regardless of the circumstances. This highlights Algeria’s commitment to maritime safety and international cooperation in rescue operations. The successful evacuation underscores the effectiveness of the Algerian Coast Guard’s resources and training.
