Algerian Coast Guard Rescues French Sailor in Distress

Algiers, November 21, 2025 – The Algerian Ministry of National Defense announced today the successful medical evacuation of a French sailor experiencing a health crisis at sea. The rescue operation took place north of Ain Benian, near Algiers.

According to a statement released by the ministry, the National Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Center received a distress call earlier this morning from a sailor aboard a French-flagged sailing vessel named “SY-FRILEUSE.” The vessel was located approximately 57 nautical miles north of Ain Benian.

The statement further indicated that the ship was en route from Sardinia to the Strait of Gibraltar. The sailor in distress was identified as Nicolas Charpy, a 60-year-old French national who was suffering from a sudden medical emergency.

Upon receiving the distress call, the National Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Center, in coordination with the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Center in Algiers, immediately initiated a rescue and medical evacuation operation. An AS-12 search and rescue helicopter from the 560th Search and Rescue Helicopter Regiment was deployed to the scene.

The French sailor was swiftly evacuated to the Zeralda Hospital to receive the necessary medical treatment. He is now reported to be in stable condition.

The Ministry’s statement emphasized that this operation is part of the humanitarian missions undertaken by the Coast Guard units of the Naval Forces. It reflects their commitment and dedication to intervening and saving human lives at sea under all circumstances. This rescue highlights Algeria’s ongoing efforts to provide maritime assistance and support to those in need.
