Algiers, Algeria – The Algerian health sector is poised for significant expansion with the creation of 24,487 new financial positions, as outlined in the proposed 2026 Finance Law. Minister of Health, Mohamed Sadik Ait Mesoudan, revealed the details during a presentation to the Finance and Budget Committee of the National People’s Assembly.
The Minister highlighted that the proposed allocation represents a substantial increase of 5,397 positions compared to 2025. This boost is intended to address critical needs within the healthcare system and improve access to medical services across the country.
Of the total new positions, 2,600 are earmarked for specialist physicians, reflecting a commitment to enhancing specialized medical care. An additional 2,000 positions will be allocated to general practitioners, bolstering primary healthcare services. The nursing and paramedical staff will see a significant increase with 14,860 new roles. Furthermore, 3,000 contractual agent positions will be created, alongside 90 positions for specialized administrative personnel within the health sector.
Notably, 1,937 new positions are designated for midwives in public health, underscoring the government’s focus on maternal and child health.
The health sector will benefit from a substantial financial injection, with over 1.048 trillion dinars allocated as payment appropriations and over 1.038 trillion dinars as commitment authorizations, according to Minister Ait Mesoudan.
The Minister explained that the budget distribution aligns with strategic objectives designed to support key programs within the sector. These programs encompass prevention, treatment, training, and general administration, ensuring a comprehensive approach to improving the nation’s health infrastructure and services.
