A new meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump is “possible” and under consideration, according to a high-ranking Russian diplomat. Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, indicated the potential for another summit between the two leaders.
In an interview, Ryabkov stated that while nothing is ruled out, any future contact between Putin and Trump must be substantive. “The next contact between the leaders is on the agenda. We must ensure that this contact is meaningful,” he said, emphasizing the need to adhere to the framework previously agreed upon.
Ryabkov further elaborated on the challenges in fostering improved relations. He pointed to a wave of “anti-Russian sentiment” and actions from those he described as opponents of progress and supporters of continued conflict. These elements, particularly in Western European capitals, allegedly aim to influence the Trump administration and prevent what Russia believes is a sustainable solution to the ongoing crisis.
The Deputy Foreign Minister suggested that Trump’s administration is among the few in the West that recognize the validity of Russia’s argument that the root causes of the current tensions cannot be ignored. He specifically cited the “reckless and ill-conceived policy” of previous US administrations, including the Biden administration, in expanding NATO and its infrastructure closer to Russia’s borders as a key factor contributing to the crisis.
DZWatch will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on any potential meetings between Putin and Trump.
