President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has called on G20 leaders to forge strategic partnerships with African nations, emphasizing the critical need for a just energy transition and the assurance of global food security. Speaking on Saturday, during a session focused on resilience, disaster risk reduction, climate change, energy transitions, and food systems, President Tebboune, highlighted Algeria’s comprehensive approach to addressing these interconnected global challenges.
President Tebboune underscored the severe impact of climate change, noting Algeria’s particular vulnerability to its adverse effects. He cited recent extreme weather events, including heatwaves, droughts, and floods, which have necessitated an urgent national response. In response, Algeria has established a robust legal and institutional framework for disaster management, supported by early warning systems and dedicated financial mechanisms to compensate affected parties, particularly within the agricultural sector and national solidarity initiatives.
On a continental and regional scale, President Tebboune emphasized Algeria’s leading role, announcing an initiative to create an ‘African Mechanism for Disaster Risk Prevention.’ This mechanism aims to establish a continental civil force capable of providing rapid and effective support to affected countries and aiding in reconstruction efforts. Furthermore, he affirmed ongoing efforts to activate the ‘Arab Center for Earthquake and Natural Disaster Prevention,’ headquartered in Algeria, to serve as a hub for scientific research, knowledge sharing, and technology transfer among Arab nations.
Addressing the issue of food security, President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s commitment to self-sufficiency, highlighting the country’s significant investments in Saharan agriculture. He extended a direct invitation to G20 nations to establish agricultural partnerships with African countries to combat hunger. President Tebboune’s advocacy underscores Algeria’s commitment to a fair and sustainable global future.
