Algeria is committed to establishing a robust legal and institutional framework for protection against major risks and disaster management. This commitment encompasses all aspects of intervention, from strengthening infrastructure and enhancing technical capabilities to establishing and improving early warning systems for earthquakes, floods, and forest fires.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed Algeria’s dedication during the second session of the G20 Summit, titled “Building a Resilient World – G20 Contribution: Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Just Energy Transitions, Food Systems.” The statement, delivered by Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui, highlighted Algeria’s vulnerability to the negative impacts of climate change.
President Tebboune emphasized that Algeria has witnessed an unprecedented increase in various phenomena, including rising seasonal temperatures, heatwaves, drought leading to scarcity of water resources and essential food commodities, desertification, forest fires, earthquakes, torrential rains, and resulting floods. These disasters cause significant human and material losses across various sectors, impacting infrastructure, facilities, agricultural projects, and ecosystems.
“In response to this reality, my country is keen to establish a legal and institutional arsenal to protect against major risks and manage disasters,” stated President Tebboune. This includes reinforcing infrastructure, strengthening technical and technological capabilities, and establishing improved early warning systems for earthquakes, floods, and forest fires.
These efforts are supported by substantial financial resources through national funds for agricultural cooperation, national solidarity, and natural disaster risk guarantees. These funds enable those affected to access the necessary financing to cope with damages and losses resulting from these disasters.
Furthermore, Algeria has taken a proactive role on the regional and continental levels. President Tebboune noted that Algeria initiated the establishment of an African mechanism for disaster risk prevention. This initiative aims to create a regional civil force for natural disaster preparedness and response, ensuring effective and immediate support to affected African nations through operational action.
Algeria is dedicated to building resilience and mitigating the impact of disasters through comprehensive legal frameworks, technological advancements, and regional cooperation.
