A high-level Nigerian government delegation, led by National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu, recently concluded a series of meetings in the United States aimed at countering what it describes as “misleading narratives” surrounding religious freedom within the country.
According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the delegation engaged with key US officials, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, members of Congress, State Department officials, and influential figures within Washington’s policy circles.
The Nigerian delegation presented documented evidence addressing security challenges facing the nation, offering a detailed explanation of counter-terrorism operations and the coordination mechanisms between security agencies. They emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Minister Idris stressed that the initiative aims to correct Nigeria’s image abroad, particularly following increased discussions in the US Congress and lobbying efforts by rights groups alleging “genocide” against Christians. “These narratives are not only inaccurate but also dangerous, as extremists have targeted both Muslims and Christians alike,” Idris stated.
He further noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, strengthening the internal security architecture and expanding international cooperation in counter-terrorism and intelligence sharing. The delegation’s mission reflects the current administration’s determination to defend Nigeria’s reputation and ensure that international partners’ positions are based on accurate information, not on biased narratives.
The Minister affirmed that relations between Nigeria and the United States remain strong, and these meetings reflect Abuja’s openness to dialogue, partnership, and transparency. Further engagements are expected in the coming days. The Nigerian government is committed to fostering a clear and accurate understanding of the situation on the ground.
