Severe Thunderstorms, Sandstorms Threaten Several Algerian Regions

Algiers, November 23, 2025 – Several regions of Algeria are bracing for severe weather conditions, according to a special weather alert issued by the National Meteorological Office. The alert warns of heavy thunderstorms in the northern parts of the country and strong sandstorms in the south.

The weather service indicates a significant increase in thunderstorm activity, with localized heavy rainfall expected from midnight (00:00) Sunday until 6:00 AM Monday. The affected northern provinces include Tipaza, Chlef, Mostaganem, Relizane, and Ain Defla. Residents in these areas are advised to take necessary precautions.

The alert is classified as Level 1 (Yellow), indicating a call for vigilance.

Simultaneously, a separate Level 1 alert has been issued for the southern provinces of Bordj Badji Mokhtar and Adrar. This alert concerns strong winds carrying sand, which could significantly reduce visibility. The sandstorm is expected to affect these regions from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM today, Sunday. Motorists and individuals planning outdoor activities are urged to exercise caution.
