EU-African Union Summit Commences in Luanda

Luanda, Angola – Leaders from the European Union and the African Union are convening today in Luanda for a two-day summit focused on strengthening cooperation and addressing key mutual challenges.

The summit, officially underway, will see representatives from both the EU and AU engaging in discussions covering a broad spectrum of critical issues. These include peace and security initiatives, enhanced multilateral cooperation, migration and mobility strategies, and pathways to shared prosperity across both continents.

A joint declaration is expected to be released tomorrow, outlining the agreed-upon priorities and commitments resulting from the discussions. Both sides are reportedly eager to deepen collaboration in various sectors, building upon the foundation established since the inaugural EU-AU summit held in Cairo in 2000, marking 25 years of partnership.

The European Union currently stands as Africa’s most significant trading partner, according to EU statistics. Conversely, the African nations collectively represent the fourth-largest trading partner for the European Union, highlighting the interconnectedness of their economies.

In 2023, the EU emerged as the primary source of foreign direct investment into Africa, with investments totaling approximately 239 billion euros (equivalent to 275 billion US dollars), according to data released by the European Commission. This substantial investment underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering economic growth and development within the African continent.
