Gaza City – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has warned that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains catastrophic, despite the declared ceasefire. The agency cites ongoing restrictions on the entry of international staff and aid, leading to a massive backlog of approximately 6,000 trucks filled with vital food supplies at border crossings.
According to a statement released by UNRWA, over 90 percent of Gaza’s population is now entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance. Many residents are reportedly receiving only one meal per day, while the daily average of 170 trucks entering the territory falls significantly short of the minimum required to meet basic needs. The agency emphasizes the urgent need for increased aid access to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population.
UNRWA is currently managing 100 shelters housing more than 80,000 displaced individuals. The agency continues to provide education to approximately 300,000 students remotely and 50,000 in person, despite the extremely challenging and psychologically taxing conditions. An estimated 44,000 children in Gaza are receiving education in difficult circumstances within 330 temporary learning spaces spread across 59 shelters.
On the health front, UNRWA clinics are treating an average of 15,000 patients daily through seven health centers and 35 mobile medical points. Malnutrition rates have reportedly soared to 90 percent, highlighting the severity of the food crisis. The agency also revealed that it has lost 380 staff members since the start of the conflict. Furthermore, approximately 90 percent of UNRWA’s facilities, totaling around 300 buildings, have been damaged by shelling, severely impacting its operational capacity.
DZWatch will continue to monitor the situation in Gaza and provide updates as they become available.
