Algeria mourns the loss of renowned actress Bahia Bouzar, widely known as Beyouna, who passed away today, Tuesday, at the age of 73 after a prolonged illness. A celebrated figure in Algerian comedy and the arts, Beyouna’s death marks the end of an era for Algerian entertainment.
Beyouna had been hospitalized since Tuesday, November 4th. She was initially admitted to Bainem Hospital in Algiers before being transferred to the pulmonary department at Beni Messous Hospital due to a deterioration in her health. Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, had instructed officials to provide urgent care for the actress.
The beloved actress had been suffering from severe respiratory distress, hindering oxygen flow to the brain. These complications were further exacerbated by a battle with cancer, which was diagnosed in 2016. Beyouna’s health had been a matter of public concern in recent weeks.
Beyouna’s illustrious career spanned decades, beginning in her youth with theater and acting before expanding into singing, music, and writing. Her contributions to Algerian culture were significant, both domestically and internationally, particularly in Europe. She played a vital role in promoting Algerian artistry on a global stage.
