Luanda, Angola – Algeria and Angola are deepening diplomatic cooperation to address the escalating challenges facing the Sahel and Sahara regions. The move comes amidst growing concerns over security and stability in the area.
During the 7th African Union-European Union Summit in Luanda, Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held bilateral talks with Benin’s Foreign Minister, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral ties between Algeria and Benin, with both ministers expressing satisfaction with recent developments, particularly the establishment of diplomatic missions in each other’s capitals. This was hailed as a crucial step towards enhancing political and economic cooperation.
Discussions also centered on the rapidly evolving situation in the Sahel and Sahara. Both ministers emphasized the need for unified international and African efforts to confront the security and political challenges threatening regional stability. They agreed to maintain close coordination and consultation on matters of mutual interest to promote regional peace and security.
“The security of the Sahel is paramount,” stated Minister Attaf during a brief press availability after the meeting. “Algeria is committed to working with its partners, including Angola and Benin, to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing the region.”
These discussions are part of a series of bilateral meetings taking place at the summit, aimed at elevating the African-European partnership and bolstering collective action in addressing shared challenges.
