Minister Attaf: Four Crises Threaten African Stability

Algiers – Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, has warned of escalating instability across the African continent, citing four key crises demanding urgent attention. Speaking at the recent Africa-Europe summit in Angola, Minister Attaf painted a concerning picture of a continent facing a confluence of challenges, signaling a need for immediate action.

Attaf emphasized the exceptional international context in which the summit was taking place, characterized by complex political and security crises. He noted that Africa has been disproportionately affected by these global disturbances, leading to severe internal consequences.

The resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government was identified as a primary threat. Attaf stated that these events are no longer isolated incidents but rather a spreading and deeply rooted reality, lacking clear prospects for a return to constitutional order.

Furthermore, Minister Attaf highlighted the worsening threat of terrorism in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region. He described the Sahel as the new international hub for terrorism, stressing the devastating impact on nations and populations amid what he termed an inexplicable international silence.

The Foreign Minister also pointed to foreign military interventions as a recurring feature of Africa’s security landscape. He argued that these interventions often exacerbate crises instead of resolving them, hindering peaceful political settlements.

Finally, Attaf cautioned against the decline in diplomatic engagement within the continent and the reduced international focus on African political and security issues. This, he asserted, has resulted in Africa’s absence from the top of the international agenda, overshadowed by other global hotspots.

Minister Attaf concluded by emphasizing the need for a collective awakening and a re-prioritization of efforts to ensure the consolidation of peace, security, and good governance across the continent.
